Cunina wants to leave a lasting impression in the places where they are active. The goal of our projects is to help the local community become independent and self-reliant. As a partner, you are not just a sponsor but also the driving force behind the realization of the project.

Why has Cunina started this project?

In South Africa, 13% of all children below eighteen years of age have lost their mother or father to AIDS. The number of AIDS orphans is estimated at 2.2 million. In a lot of families, the oldest children assume the father or mother role and take care of their young brothers and sisters.

Cunina tries to provide orphans with a place to live close to their community and makes sure that they are raised as normally as possible. That is why a family home or a foster home is the right place for these orphans.

Therefore, Cunina has built five family homes for 30 orphans in Eshowe. A care mother with six orphans lives in each house. She is a mother for life and makes sure that the orphans live in a warm, loving and safe home. The children go to school on a daily basis. The family homes also serve as an operating base to select foster homes in the area. This way, more orphans will have opportunities for a better future.

Cunina cooperates closely with Thokomala, a South African NGO, which is managing the project since 2011. However, Cunina still financially supports the project through child sponsorships.

We work together with the local community and use local materials to support the local economy, create jobs and provide even more children with education.

I would like to ask a question about South Africa

Why does Cunina operate in South Africa?

Access to quality education is not guaranteed for children in poor rural regions and the teachers are often low-skilled. Every year, thousands of teachers die from AIDS. More and more children lose their parents to AIDS and from then on they are on their own. Education is the last thing on their mind.

Cunina operates in Eshowe and Underberg.

Cunina projects in South Africa

Cunina has been operating in South Africa since 2002 and started projects in two locations: Eshowe and Underberg. Next to continuing the development of education, Cunina has also built a skill center and family homes for orphans.
